Do most schools have individual student computer access accounts?

Well, my school has one universal account for ALL students to use. However, with individual accounts, it is easier to monitor individual student internet access. So, why do some schools not have individual web accounts, but rather one universal, virtually untrackable computer account?

  1. My school has individual accounts. For this, there has to be a specific section of the server set aside for each user, and each with a different IP address identifying where the internet is going through and thus who is using it. This also means that there is only a set amount of disk space for each user, for while the entire space of the server may be enough for everyone, the fact that each user has his/her own drive may not give some users enough space, while others, too much. Your school may not have a server capable of being divided (I don’t know how that would be done) or they may not want to go through the trouble. Maybe they’ve never been faced with a problem where they had to know who was on. Or, they could not be able to afford a decent account monitor, like Novel, to control the accounts. Windows alone would be way to easy for people to mess with.

my school has individual student accounts too, but the school i transferred from does not. instead they make it mandatory to sign into the computer you are using, sadly, on a piece of paper next to the computer, and recommend you write in ink.
but, to give them some credit, they do have a room where all the activities on the school server is monitored, and if anything suspitious or inappropriate is spotted then the person in that room can immediately find which computer in which room and notify the principal, who swoops in and catches them in the act.
