BWTV Pilot – Better World Shopping Guide

This is a pilot for a weekly video podcast series we’d like to see funded. Each week a different consumer product category is examined and the best and worst companies are highlighted for the practices that characterize their social and environmental responsibility. Companies are graded from A to F for their overall performance based on the research in The Better World Shopping Guide by Ellis Jones, Ph.D. This pilot episode, created and produced by Liam Creighton, focuses on chocolate as the product category. It would fit under the themes of corporate social responsibility (CSR), green business, ethical consumerism, and socially responsible shopping. For more information on the research behind the rankings, visit: www.betterworldshopper.org. Let us know if you’re interested in supporting this kind of effort.

I don’t know what to do…I’m scared…need help?

Hi, I’m a second journalism student in Canada, and I need some serious financial advice. I’m too afraid to talk to my parents about it.

I have been receiving student loans from the government for the past 2 years, but it hasn’t been enough. The first year I received 8,000. I needed to pay my tuition before the loan came through so my parents and I got a line of credit for 5,000. I qualify for low income. 2,000 paid for tuition paid by the line of credit and another 3,000 for books and supplies such as camera equipment ect paid by student loans. I then only had 3,000 left on my line of credit. And 5000 from loans.

My second term was covered by the remaining 5000 from student loans.

I was laid off of my job and used the remaining 3000 on the line of credit to get by.

In second year I receievd a total of 14,000. It may seem like a lot but not when I explain where it went. I now live in residence, and they have increased the cost of tuition. 2,500 to Tuition, 2,500 to res, each term for a total of 10,000 a year. 4,000 was left for living. the first term I was given 3,000. Most of which went to pay off my visa and line of credit. I will now be receiving the remaining 1,000 on January 1. Which will not cover my 4,000 visa and my 4,000 line of credit. I plan to use the 1,000 I receive on Jan 1 along with the 1,000 on the line of credit to pay some of the visa off as the interest rate on the line of credit is only 5% versus 20% on visa.

I would like to request more money from student loans so I can pay the rest of my visa off and some of the line of credit. I have heard rumors that the maximum I can receive a year is 14,000. This worries me. I don’t understand how they expect students to live off that much in a year. It costs me on average 1500 a month to survive. 500 to my car which transports me to my job which was all I could find in this economy on the other side of the ctiy. 500 to personal needs such as food, and other things. and 500 to other expenses. What are my options if student loans rejects my request? Is this common for students? What should I do?! I need money to survive and I don’t know where to get it….So scared….
